Gender of Record values include Female, Male, and Decline to State.
These values are derived from two methods:
Method 1)  For undergraduate students who entered prior to Fall 2016 and graduate students, Gender of Record is derived from their Berkeley application with two options: Male and Female.  Students who skip this question are given a Gender of Record of Decline to State (historically few students have done so).
Method 2)  For undergraduate students who entered in Fall 2016 or later, Gender is derived from their Berkeley application from two questions:
Question 1. How do you describe yourself? (Mark one answer)
 Male
 Female
 Trans Male/Trans Man
 Trans Female/Trans Woman
 Genderqueer/Gender Non-Conforming
 Different Identity
Question 2. What sex were you assigned at birth, such as on an original birth certificate? (Mark one answer)
 Male
 Female
If a student responds to Question 1 with "Male" or "Trans Male/Trans Man", their Gender of Record is Male.
If a student responds to Question 1 with "Female" or "Trans Female/Trans Woman", their Gender of Record is Female.
If a student responds to Question 1 with "Genderqueer/Gender Non-Conforming" or "Different Identity" and Question 2 with "Male", their Gender of Record is Male.
If a student responds to Question 1 with "Genderqueer/Gender Non-Conforming" or "Different Identity" and Question 2 with "Female", their Gender of Record is Female.
If a student does not respond to Question 1 but responds to Question 2 with "Male", their Gender of Record is Male.
If a student does not respond to Question 1 but responds to Question 2 with "Female", their Gender of Record is Female.
If a student responds to Question 1 with "Genderqueer/Gender Non-Conforming" or "Different Identity" and did not respond to Question 2, their Gender of Record is Decline to State.
If a student did not respond to either question, their Gender of Record is Decline to State.
