Connecting to the Directory


Many modern EMAIL CLIENT applications are LDAP-enabled and can be configured to connect directly to the CalNet Directory Service, this allows quick and easy searches for directory information of people associated with the campus.

CalNet Directory Configuration Settings:


To configure any LDAP-enabled email client application to connect directly to the CalNet Directory, only a few configuration parameters are required:

SERVER NAME:

ldap.berkeley.edu

STANDARD PORT:

389

SECURE PORT (SSL):

636

SEARCH BASE:

ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu

WORD-WISE SEARCH FILTER:

(cn=^0)

Instructions for Eudora 5.1R (Windows):


  1. Click on the "Tools" menu and select "Directory Services".
  2. In the "Protocols" section, select the "LDAP" protocol and then click "New Database...".
  3. Click on the "Network" tab of the dialog box (if not already selected) and enter "CalNet Directory" in the field provided.
  4. Under the "Server Information" portion of the dialog box, enter "ldap.berkeley.edu" in the field labeled "Host Name".
  5. Enter "389" in the field labeled "Port".
  6. Click on the "Search Options" tab of the dialog box and enter "ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu" in the field labeled "Search Base".
  7. Ensure that the value (cn=^0) is set for the "Word-wise Search Filter" field.
  8. Click the "OK" button.
  9. In the "Databases" section, make sure that the Check-Box next to "CalNet Directory" is checked.

Instructions for Outlook Express 6 (Windows):


  1. Click on the "Tools" menu and select "Accounts".
  2. Click the "ADD" button and then select "Directory Service".
  3. In the field labeled "Internet directory (LDAP) server", enter "ldap.berkeley.edu".
  4. Click the "Next >" button.
  5. If you would like to check email addresses using the directory, select the "yes" option.
  6. Click the "Next >" button.
  7. Click the "Finish" button.
  8. Select the newly added "ldap.berkeley.edu" directory service in the displayed list of accounts and then click the "Properties" button.
  9. Click on the "Advanced" tab of the dialog box.
  10. Under the "Server Port Number" portion of the dialog box, make sure that field labeled "Directory Service (LDAP)" is set to "389".
    (If you desire to connect to directory securely, select the "This server requires a sercure connection (SSL)" option and set the port to "636".)
  11. Under the "Search" portion of the dialog box, enter "ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu" in the field labeled "Search Base".
  12. Click the "APPLY" button.
  13. Click the "OK" button.

Instructions for Outlook 2010 (Windows):


  1. On the File/Info panel, click Account Settings... under the Account Settings button menu.
  2. On the Address Books tab, select New...
  3. Select the Internet Directory Service (LDAP) option and click the Next > button.
  4. Under the Server Information portion of the dialog box, enter ldap.berkeley.edu in the field labeled Server Name: and click the "More Settings..." button.
  5. Under the Display Name portion of the dialog box, enter CalNet Directory in the field provided.
  6. Under the Connection Details portion of the dialog box, make sure that field labeled Port is set to 389.
  7. Click on the Search tab at the top of the current dialog box and under the Search Base portion of the dialog box, select the Custom option and enter ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu in the field.
  8. Click the OK button.
  9. Click the Next > button.
  10. Click the Finish button.

Instructions for Mac Mail/Address Book for MacOS X:


  1. Open the OS-X Address book. (in the Applications folder)
  2. From the "Address Book" drop-down menu, select Preferences...#Click the LDAP tab, and then click the "Add" button.
  3. Enter the following information in the Name, Server, and Search Base boxes:
    • Name: UC Berkeley Directory
    • Server: ldap.berkeley.edu
    • Search Base: ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu
  4. Click Save and close the Preferences window.

Instructions for Thunderbird 3.x:


In the Thunderbird program:

  1. Select the Edit/Preferences or equivalent menu.
  2. Select the Addressing tab under Composition
  3. Click the Edit Directories button
  4. Click the Add button, then enter the following information in the General tab fields:
    • Name: CalNet Directory
    • Hostname: ldap.berkeley.edu
    • Base DN: ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu
    • Port number: (default) 389
    • Bind DN: (default) blank
    • Use secure connection (SSL): leave unchecked
  5. Click OK to save the properties
  6. Check Directory Server and select CalNet Directory from the list
  7. Click Close to save your configuration.
