Syntax of name-giving

Typical Pattern

PN DUMU sza2 PN2 (DUMU sza2 PN3 DUMU sza2 PNx) A LN

PN son of PN2 (son of PN3 son of PNx) descendant of LN

DUMU and A can be used interchangably (except before LN), so that PN A sza2 PN2 (A sza2 PN3 A sza2 PNx) A LN* is equivalent to PN DUMU sza2 PN2 (DUMU sza2 PN3 DUMU sza2 PNx) A LN*.

PN u PN2 DUMU-MESZ sza2 PN3 A LN

PN and PN2 sons of PN3 descendant of LN.   [The use of MESZ on DUMU flags that two or more  individuals are named and have that relationship to the following name.  It also means that PN and PN2 are brothers---a relationship that would be useful to get from the markup at some point.]

Variants and modifications

PN DUMU sza2 PN2 PN3 SZESZ-szu2 A(-MESZ) LN
PN son of PN2 (and) PN3, his brother (i.e., brother of PN), descendant(s) of LN

PN DUMU sza2 PN2 PN3 DUMU-szu2 A(-MESZ) LN
PN son of PN2, PN3, his son (i.e., son of PN), descendant(s) of LN

PN ARAD-su
PN, his slave (refers to previous PN)

PN ARAD-su sza2 SZU-MIN (15-szu2) ina MU sza2 PN2(/PN3) szat,rat
PN, his slave, whose right hand is written with the name of PN2(/PN3)

PN2 is name of a previous owner of the slave. It may or may not be equivalent to the name of the person currently selling the slave in question.

Double names ("other name")

PN sza2 MU-szu sza-nu-u2 PN2 DUMU sza2 PN3
PN, whose other name is PN2, son of PN3
