Facilitate Discovery of Objects by the General Public

Keywords: Engage, Share and Publish

Activity Definition(s)

Facilitating the discovery of scholarly and cultural objects by the general public can happen either by (a) attracting them to sites that host these collections or (b) by exposing scholarly and cultural artifacts to the general discovery tools that they commonly use, e.g.: Google.

The first approach relies on publishing techniques that describe the scholarly and cultural object in terms relevant to a general audience. This might be accomplished by mounting an exhibition, maintaining a blog or web site, or using other techniques that allow members of the public to understand relevance, browse collections, and search within a locally hosted archive. It might include providing mechanisms to apply, expose, and discover through folksonomies, i.e., through relevance indicators indicated by the general audience to which objects are being exposed.

The second approach relies more on serendipity.  It may involve aggregating content within more generally used discovery sites via mashups, federated search across collections, metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH), or indexing by general web search engines or targeted products like Google site search.
