I would also add a search protocol like SRU (or even Z39.50) that could be common across a number

of different resources and services to provide interoperability in search.

Also worth noting: OKI Repository Open Service Interface Definitions (OSIDs) exist for SRU, OAI-PMH, z39.50, Opensearch, etc.  OSID repository plugins are used by applications like VUE, Pachyderm 2.0, Sophie, Blackboard and others as a way to integrate federated search into the application.  Here is a good list of existing implementations, provided by a consultant we are working with to develop an OSID for CONTENTdm.  http://www.verbenaconsulting.com/

The Text Encoding Initiative Consortium may be worth mentioning, especially as it seeks to have a standard for presenting texts in digital form: http://www.tei-c.org/index.xml
