Keywords: enter key words from controlled-vocabulary list

Activity Definition(s)

  1. A scholar discovers images through a keyword search of an image registry or of content containing images such as a website or newspaper article.
  2. A scholar discovers images by searching for similar images, based on image content.

The first type of image search is still a keyword search even if, behind the scenes, extensive analysis has been done to classify or tag images automatically, based on their content. The image content such a scanned newspaper article that has a transcript, then there can be a "text search" option (see Audio Search).

The second type of image search involves the following tasks:

  • Create and/or submit image content for matching
    • Supply a pre-existing image; or
    • Select an image from a set; or
    • Draw a picture of content relevant to the inquiry; or
    • Invoke a start image through a keyword prompt (eg churches)
  • Browse result set (usually rank-ordered by the similarity algorithm)
  • Get more information about a discovered image

More than one image may be submitted in the search request for matching by example.

These can be "fuzzy" in either case: for the first see Keyword Search; for the second see Audio Search.

  • This kind of search is also called: Content-based image retrieval (CBIR), Query by Image Content (QBIC) and Content-Based Visual Information Retrieval (CBVIR).
  • In practice, keyword searches and CBIR can be seen as expressions of the same search service genre. In CBIR, the image package or image identifier is included in the search query.
  • As with keyword search a lot of processes go on behind the scenes to support the primary shared search service; eg: compute color, compute texture, compute shape.
