Activity Definition(s)

A scholar discovers an artefact that an inquiry (study, exploration) will address, obtains a local copy and stores it in such a way that it can be easily rediscovered when it is needed for the inquiry.

  • Add an artefact to a collection of discovered materials.
  • As part of the process:
    • View metadata about the artefact that either came with it as part of the Dissemination Information Package (DIP) and/or can be inferred from the artefact.
    • Update metadata with more information about the artefact and its provenance.
    • Classify the artefact using open or closed vocabularies relevant to the inquiry.
    • Associate the artefact with a location and/or chronology relevant to the inquiry.
    • Associate the artefact with related artefacts.

Notes, comments, related activities, concerns

----This activity combines:

  • Organize discovered materials in a relational database
  • Organize discovered materials in an RDF store
  • Organize discovered materials in a distributed, column-oriented store (e.g., Hadoop)

This activity is more informal and individual than depositing created artefacts in a trusted repository for preservation and future access but has many similar processes.

This activity could equally apply to created artefacts that need to be managed and organised in an active work environment as well as discovered artefacts.
