Preserve a visualization or a model

Keywords: Preserve

Activity Definition(s)

Visualizations or digital models of an artifact, archeological site, geographic region, event, performance or analysis can be captured and digitally preserved for reconstruction, dissemination or further analysis and refinement.  These might be VRML models, 2-D or 3-D CAD objects, map representations or GIS datasets, holographic projections, or others.  Much intellectual work, data and computation may go into generating such visualizations and models, and the results may be preserved for others to access and build upon.

  • Determine scope of preservation - is it only the resultant digital object, or all inputs and manipulations which created the visualization or model?
  • Identify the necessary components to be captured and how to capture them.
  • Obtain copies of all the necessary components.
    • Input parameters
    • Data and metadata
    • Software package(s) or links to them (and version information)
    • Methods and procedures used
    • Resultant digital objects comprising the visualization or model
    • Other supporting documentation.
  • Assemble, edit and verify the components, especially if the inputs to the visualization or model are being captured, to insure the resultant digital objects are properly recreated.
  • Migrate components to more durable formats as needed.
  • Preserve materials in a digital storage facility.

Notes, comments, related activities, concerns

This was originally titled "Preserve a visualization of an artifact, event, performance, etc. (e.g., VRML models)."  Also included are two other activities which seemed to fit here, originally titled "Store maps" and "Store GIS data sets."
