The Brown University Local Bamboo Group met and discussed various actual scenarios for research and scenarios. The participants in this discussion were two faculty members and 4 CIS staff members from the Academic Services Group.

The scholar is studying a Hebrew text. Most of this takes place on paper.

  • Search: Go online, look for books, articles, search some online databases. It is easier to locate things online.
  • Collect: Gather citations and sources on the computer.

The next steps happen usually on paper, using printed books. Other than articles, most of the materials are not available in digital form.

  • Read the text, using a critical edition
  • Look up words in a Hebrew lexicon
  • Find a manuscript to confirm a reading
  • Look at commentaries
  • Look at parallel texts in Hebrew, or perhaps in Greek.(If it's a classical text, it's possible that it would be online. The Hebrew text usually are not.)
  • Email colleagues to discuss particular points or ask questions. (This should be easy online, but there are often compatibility problems with character sets and email software.)
  • Analysis takes place without technology, in the scholar's head.

The searching and gathering parts as well as the analysis contain exploratory, playful elements, that can lead to serendipitous discovery.
