This page is for discussing possible architectures we might use for a scholarly network. To help keep track of the conversation, please sign your comments.
Our work with a social science VRE (Education Researchers) demonstrated that subject loyalty creates a stronger bond than institutional loyalty and that subjects (or research domains) are the more natural focus of networking. However, there are few research communities with the resources to provide IT infrastructure for the research community. Typically, anything that is provided has a non-institutional URL but is hosted at an institution. It is interesting to speculate about how a group of institutions might gather together to provide an "academic cloud" upon which such scholarly networking services could run - either by connecting together their own servers or providing the expertise to use the commercial cloud. I have a wish for an architecture that separates the user interface from the service layer via a restful data service. Not least because the information collected by the service can then be reused and recombined more easily into forms we can't imagine today. It also liberates the UI development to a large array of developer skills and technologies. [John Norman]
