Workshop 1 Questions

Workshop 1 was held four times: at Berkeley (1a), at Chicago (1b), in Paris (1c), and at Princeton (1d). While each workshop covered the same topics, the questions were revised in between workshops.



Initial Impressions (1b, 1c, 1d)

  • What do you hope Bamboo will accomplish? What questions do you have regarding Bamboo?
  • What questions do you have regarding Bamboo? 
  • We are gathering together representatives from a range of backgrounds -- scholars, libraries, IT staff, presses, funding agencies -- around the theme of how technology can better serve arts and humanities research. Based on what you have heard at the table and read from the proposal, what one or two questions, observations and hopes would your table like to share with the group? (1c)

Exploring Scholarly Practice (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d)

  • As a researcher, librarian, IT professional, computer scientists, etc.: During a really good day, term, research cycle, etc. what productive things do you do in relation to humanities research?
  • How do you accomplish that task/practice? (1c)
  • Attempt to break efforts into discrete practices (1c)
  • Note: At 1a there were three questions related to this theme: Identify and Name Five Scholarly Practices, Build a List of Relevant Scholarly Practices, Aggregate Scholarly Practices

Common and Uncommon (1b, 1c, 1d)

  • What are common themes that have emerged from your exploration of scholarly practices?
  • Based on your discussion of scholarly practices, what are two themes that piqued the curiosity of those at your table, or are uncommon?
  • What makes these themes common and uncommon?
  • Note: At 1a, this question was presented as Cluster Scholarly Practices

Unpacking a Commonality (1b, 1c)

  • What discrete practices are involved in this theme?
  • What outstanding issues need to be addressed in regards to this theme?
  • Note: At 1a, this was addressed as Assess and Expand a Cluster of Scholarly Practices

Unpacking the Uncommon (1b, 1c)

  • For whom/which disciplines or areas of study is this theme helpful
  • What discrete practices are involved in this theme?
  • What outstanding issues need to be addressed in regards to this theme?

Identify Future Scholarly Practices, Magic Wand (1b, 1c, 1d)

  • When you look at new-hires or up-and-coming graduate students, what practices do they use that are different from yours?
  • If you had a magic wand, what would make your day, term, research cycle more productive in relation to research?
  • Note: At 1a there were two questions related to this theme: Identify and Name Future Scholarly Practices and
    Cluster Future Scholarly Practices

Opportunities for Bamboo - Future Practices (1b, 1c, 1d)

  • Discuss which future practices / activities you think would be best supported by a consortial effort like Bamboo and explain why.
