Why might this direction be appropriate for Project Bamboo?

Summary

Explanation

All participating universities would donate money for a team of genetic engineers. A group of scholars would oversee the process and check in with them periodically. Additional funds provided by European universities would be put towards making sure the tree also grows Euros. -J.L. Botanist

Scholars, librarians, and technologists often seek more money to do their work. A money tree would save them time so they no longer have to write grant proposals. -J.L. Botanist

Bamboo is a plant. A money tree is a plant. -M.R. Plant

Since a plant was chosen as the metaphor for this project, it only makes sense that the result should be a plant. -M.R. Plant

Why might this direction be inappropriate for Project Bamboo?

Summary

Explanation

It's impossible to make a money tree, and would be difficult to use if we did. -S.K. Eptic

Even if it could work, making a money tree would take a lot of time and money. It would also be extremely difficult to determine how to fairly distribute the fruits of the money tree. -S.K. Eptic

I think I recall that Douglas Adams, in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, has described this "money tree" scenario (not sure which book in the set).  The Golgafrinchans crash land on earth, determine need for currency, decide tree leaves are money.  The result isn't very pretty....lots of leaf-less trees!  (wink)
