Multimedia

Definition

Text is only one of the many materials used and created by scholars. While much of the focus of digitization and search has been on text, non-textual material is increasingly popular. This has raised a number of issues for scholars, technologists and librarians, including findability, archival options, citability, and acceptance by promotion and tenure committees.

iTunesU

Some humanities scholars at participating institutions are making their class sessions available through a standard interface offered by Apple's iTunes store. This may be a step towards a persistent, citeable way of making scholarly multimedia available on-line.

Standardized annotation tool

A variety of projects have developed individual tools for annotating one or more forms of non-textual media, but no widely adopted one tool or standard has emerged.

MPEG-47 is a format combining the MPEG-4 video encoding standard and the MPEG-7 metadata standard.

Making an annotation tool?

The community needs the kind of tool mentioned above.

It depends on what direction Bamboo takes. If there's a part involving tool development, this could be a good candidate tool.

If we go towards a tool development project, is this one of the things we want to make? Maybe some other organization should do something about it.

Deciding as a community on a standard to enable the independent creation of an annotation tool.

Making an annotation tool?

The above-mentioned annotation tool.

It depends on what direction Bamboo takes. This would be excluded if Bamboo isn't a tool development project.

  • Disc space on any given computer is being filled with digital media (not text). What does the "replacement" of text as a primary area of focus mean to humanities scholarship? What tools are available for searching on, annotating, extracting from, publishing, etc. these -- these are at a less-developed stage than tools for text.
